Student to Receive 2024 Ellis Medal
Third-year FSU Law student Robin Rodriguez has been selected as the 2024 Ellis Medal recipient! The Ellis Medal is presented to an FSU Law student for excellence in international human rights studies and activities. Rodriguez, who was the inaugural D’Alemberte-Ellis fellow, was selected for the Ellis Medal because of her excellent work at the Human Rights Advocacy Centre in Accra, Ghana, during the summer of 2023. During her fellowship, Rodriguez, working alongside human rights advocates and lawyers, created a project on voting rights awareness, attended a disability rights conference, and drafted policy briefs advocating for better legal treatment for marginalized groups. Additionally, she interviewed clients who were seeking asylum, worked with other interns at the centre to research and track harmful legislation across sub-Saharan Africa, and collaborated with other human rights NGOs in Ghana. Professor Darby Scott, who oversees the D’Alemberte-Ellis Fellowship, notes that Rodriguez was the ideal inaugural fellow due to her independence, courage, and open-mindedness. Rodriguez will receive the Ellis Medal during the 2024 D’Alemberte & Palmer Lecture in International Human Rights on Thursday, February 29, at FSU Law.
