Foundations for Sustainable & Effective Legal Practice

This course addresses critical but traditionally neglected areas of legal education by equipping students with practical skills and knowledge essential for sustainable, effective, and humane legal practice. While particularly relevant for students interested in criminal law practice, the course content applies across all areas of law and focuses on developing lawyers who can maintain rewarding client relationships, achieve better outcomes for clients, and sustain fulfilling careers and lives. Students will learn to work effectively with vulnerable populations, develop trauma-informed lawyering skills, recognize and respond to mental health issues in clients and themselves, understand domestic violence dynamics, navigate the funding structures of poverty law, and build sustainable practices that protect against secondary trauma and burnout. Drawing on interdisciplinary research and practical strategies, this course prepares future attorneys to practice law in ways that honor both their clients’ humanity and their own well-being.
