Externship

Florida District Courts of Appeal

Credits: 6

District Courts of Appeal are located in Tallahassee, Lakeland, Tampa, Miami, West Palm Beach and Daytona Beach. Students generally are assigned to work in a clerkship capacity with one of the judges. At the First DCA (in Tallahassee), students also may be assigned to the Workers Compensation Unit or the Central Legal Staff. Duties include reviewing the briefs and the record below, conducting legal research, writing case summaries and drafting opinions. Students critically observe oral arguments, which take place only during morning hours.

Circuit/County Court

Credits: 6

Students are assigned to work directly with one of the circuit judges at the Second Judicial Circuit as an extern/judicial law clerk. Students prepare memoranda of law and draft opinions and orders. Students also have an opportunity to observe selected civil and criminal trials. The externship gives students an opportunity to improve research and writing skills as well as observe trial and motion practice skills. Students also learn about circuit and county court jurisdiction and procedure. Students gain exposure to a wide variety of substantive law. 

International Bar Association

The IBA is comprised of law societies, bar associations and individual lawyers engaged in international legal practice. Students at the IBA will assist in developing academic papers and research on legal topics of international relevance. Externs also will support the work of the IBA’s Human Rights Institute, as it promotes human rights worldwide, by researching and drafting policy papers, preparing background research for grants, and providing research support for the HRI’s technical assistance projects.
