Transformational Leadership for Lawyers

This course directly addresses the top leadership need for lawyers – the undermining of performance, professionalism, and mental/emotional health by stress, anxiety, work dissatisfaction, and related experiences common in the profession. Transformational leadership is a profound and well-validated approach encompassing numerous positive leadership styles, including authentic, ethical, moral, values-based, and self-leadership.

The course is highly developmental and participatory. Students learn in class the concepts and practices needed to elevate their global functioning and well-being, and then apply their learning during the week. There is no exam; course assessment is based on reflective reporting of applied activities, maintenance and submission of a course journal, and occasional postings with classmates.

Coverage includes the six dimensions required for professional competence -- mental, physical, emotional, relational, occupational, and spiritual, as identified by the 2017 Joint Task Force on the Future of the Legal Profession. As students learn to maximize their global functioning, they naturally begin to model constructive attitudes and behaviors that create a positive, transformational effect on others and the legal profession.

Course instructors include a certified health coach, life coach, meditation and mindfulness trainer, and experienced litigation attorney to teach the concepts and skills and demonstrate their application to diverse areas of legal practice and personal life.
