FSU Law’s Legislative Practice course welcomed Speaker Daniel Perez for an engaging discussion on his role as Florida Speaker of the House and his leadership approach. Former FSU President John Thrasher, who co-teaches the course alongside Associate Dean Debra Henley, moderated the conversation.

Speaker Perez shared valuable insights with students on how legal practice equips lawyers to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, fostering open-mindedness. He also encouraged the students to reach out to their state representative or senator and to get involved with the legislative process.

When asked to identify the legislative accomplishment that made him most proud, Speaker Perez relayed a family story that motivated him to eliminate the waiting lists for services and medical care for children with developmental disabilities.

This unique course, developed by Associate Dean Henley, combines lectures with hands-on exercises to provide students with an in-depth understanding of bill drafting, legislative analysis, and the intricacies of the legislative process. Students participate in mock committee hearings, debates, bill advocacy testimony, and both bill and amendment drafting.

In addition to gaining practical experience, students assume roles as legislative committee members and lobbyists, advocating for positions on key legislation. The course is invaluable for students pursuing careers within the Florida Legislature, lobbying firms, legislative offices of the Governor or Cabinet, and state agencies. It also opens the door to a wide array of career opportunities in the legislative process, giving students the practical skills necessary to secure entry-level positions or internships in this dynamic field.
