Trying out for the Trial Team at the FSU College of Law is an exciting opportunity for anyone looking to sharpen their advocacy skills and compete at a high level. There are two chances to make the team: Spring Tryouts and the Intramural Competition.
Spring Tryouts, open to 1Ls and 2Ls, usually happen in late January or early February. During tryouts, participants showcase their ability to build key parts of a case, including an opening statement, cross-examination, and closing argument. A panel of current team members and local attorneys score the performances, looking for strong advocacy and courtroom presence. To help prospective members prepare, veteran Trial Team members hold office hours where they offer guidance and feedback.
The Intramural Competition, open to rising 2Ls and 3Ls, is a summer-long event leading into the first week of Fall semester. Competitors work in teams of both current and prospective team members, learning how to put together a full case-in-chief under the mentorship of the more experienced Trial Team members. The competition itself is set up like a real trial, where teams go head-to-head in the courtroom. This tryout opportunity is also judged by local attorneys and judges.
Whether you prefer the structured format of Spring Tryouts or the deep-dive experience of the Intramural Competition, both paths offer a great chance to develop your courtroom skills and earn a spot on the team.
