TALLAHASSEE—Jonathan Klick has been named the Jeffrey A. Stoops Professor at Florida State University College of Law. 

The professorship, which was established by 1984 alum Jeff Stoops and his wife Aggie, is designed to encourage a highly productive faculty member to specialize in corporate, business or securities law. 

Professor Klick received his J.D. in 2003 and his Ph.D. in economics in 2002, both from George Mason University. He has published numerous articles in law and economics journals, including the Journal of Law and Economics, the Journal of Legal Studies, and the Journal of Economic Perspectives. His research focuses on empirical studies of the effects of legal and regulatory changes on individual behavior. The business courses that he teaches include Business Associations, Finance, Strategy in Law and Business, and a seminar on Corporate Governance. Professor Klick also teaches a Law and Economics seminar and Statistics for Lawyers. 

Before entering academia, he served as the associate director of the Liability Project at the American Enterprise Institute. Trained both as a lawyer and an economist, he also has served as a research fellow/economist for the Department of Defense, Council of Economic Advisors, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and the Mercatus Center. While in law school, he won the Whitney Writing Prize and was a Robert Levy Fellow. 

“Appointing Jon Klick to the Stoops Professorship is an important step in taking our program in Corporate Law to the next level,” Dean Don Weidner said. 

Klick said he is honored to be the first Stoops Professor. “My selection highlights FSU’s commitment to interdisciplinary studies of the law. This multi-dimensional focus is the hallmark of modern corporate and financial scholarship, and it really demonstrates that the law school is committed to developing a sophisticated corporate law program.” 

In December, the Stoops made a commitment of $700,000 to fund the Jeffrey A. Stoops and Agnes Flaherty Stoops Endowment at Florida State University. One half of the earnings from the endowment was designated as a gift to the College of Law to encourage scholarship in business law. The other half has been set aside to award a professor whose focus is on child welfare at the School of Social Work, from which Aggie Stoops graduated in 1983. 

Jeff Stoops, who serves on the law school’s Board of Visitors, is president, chief executive officer and a director of SBA Communications Corporation, based in Boca Raton, Fla.
