TALLAHASSEE—Horacio Spector, dean of the Torcuato Di Tella University in Buenos Aires, Argentina, will deliver the 2005 Tobias Simon Distinguished Lecture at Florida State University College of Law. His lecture, “Philosophical Foundations of Labor Law,” will take place at 3:30 p.m. on January 25 in Room 101, B.K. Roberts Hall. 

“Horacio Spector is one of the most distinguished legal and philosophical thinkers working outside the United States,” says Fernando Tesón, the Tobias Simon Eminent Scholar at the College of Law. “His ideas are profound, controversial, and always original.” 

Spector’s lecture will cover the restrictions to freedom of contract imposed by labor law. He will distinguish four justifications for labor law, show that the justifications are wanting, and argue that, if there is a solid ground for labor law, it lies in an alternative justificatory approach based on autonomy. He also will explore the practical implications of this view for legal reform. 

Spector is a leading Latin American scholar and founding dean of the School of Law at Torcuato Di Tella University. He also is a professor of jurisprudence and law and economics at the university. 

A reception will be held in the D’Alemberte Rotunda following the lecture.
