TALLAHASSEE—The Florida State University College of Law Moot Court team has brought home another big championship—this time from the E. Earle Zehmer Moot Court competition held in Orlando in August. 

Jennifer Menendez-Kotch and Erika Siu placed first out of 12 teams representing seven schools. The competition is sponsored annually by the Florida Workers’ Compensation Institute during its Workers’ Compensation Education Conference. 

Siu also received the award for Best Individual Oral Advocate out of a field of 24 students from seven schools, which included Barry, Florida Costal, Nova Southeastern and Stetson universities and the universities of Florida and Miami. 

The final round was argued in front of First District Court of Appeal judges Peter Webster, Edwin Browning Jr. and Bradford Thomas. The preliminary and semifinal rounds were judged by compensation claims judges from across the state. 

Earlier in the year, Florida State won the Mugel National Tax Moot Court Competition held in Buffalo, N.Y. 

The Florida State team was coached by Tallahassee attorney and 1984 Florida State College of Law graduate Michael Maida of Rutledge, Ecenia, Purnell & Hoffman, P.A. 

The annual education conference of the Florida Workers’ Compensation Institute draws between 7,000 and 8,000 attendees and is the nation’s largest gathering of individuals involved in workers’ compensation issues.
