Lara Schmertmann Costa is a dual United States/Brazil citizen. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida before moving to Brazil, where she earned her Bachelor of Law degree from the Universidade Católica do Salvador. Prior to commencing her law studies, Schmertmann Costa was a program assistant for the Council on International Education, where she improved her fluency in Portuguese and assisted U.S. college students studying abroad in Brazil; she also worked as an English teacher for several years. As a law student in Brazil, she was a member of her university's inaugural Jessup International Law Moot Court team and co-authored the top memorial in the II Brazilian Moot in Tax Law competition. She also served as a volunteer legal intern for the United Nations Volunteers.

As a native English speaker studying law in Brazil, Schmertmann Costa is joining the LL.M. in Business Law program to expand her knowledge of the U.S. legal framework and international business law. She is currently a law clerk at The Mooney Law Firm in Tallahassee. After graduation from the LL.M. program, Schmertmann Costa is interested in practicing international business law in the U.S. or Brazil.
